Buckhorn Park DGC
Valrico, Florida
A short, free 9-hole beginner course that loops around Buckhorn Park, a small, unstaffed Hillsborough County neighborhood park at the end of Green Valley St in Valrico. Every hole is a par 3 of about 170 to 225 ft (around 1,700 ft, par 27), so it's ideal for kids, new players and anyone working on approach shots and putting. It's flat and mostly open grass with a few big shade oaks. You tee off from grass beside short numbered posts that show the distance and an arrow to the basket (there are no tee pads), and the targets are Discraft ChainStar baskets. Hole 1 starts by the basketball court at the edge of the parking lot, and the course crosses the central soccer field twice. Hole 3 throws over a chain-link fence, and hole 6 is a blind turn around the fence. Many players treat the paved walking path that circles the park as out of bounds. The park is open sunrise to sunset, and parking is limited. There are no restrooms, but UDisc lists drinking water. Leashed dogs are welcome. Walkers and soccer games share the field, so wait for a clear lane. A round takes about 20-30 minutes.
